Zombies are capable of traveling anywhere on the map almost like a true free agent, and will often move between towns depending on the faction they were spawned in. Some zombies are more aggressive or predatory towards the player than others, often attacking and destroying normal plants in the process. Similarly, plants are more or less aggressive towards zombies and will attack them on sight, but will not kill plants outside of disease or punishments. Players can try to convince zombies to infect plants that belong to them via throwing bones at them.
A number of new and returning NPCs have been added to the island. Many of these NPCs will follow the player around from location to location, and can be interacted with in various ways. Some will warn the player about risks and rewards that can be obtained from interacting with specific plants, and some will ask for assistance dealing with other NPC’s on the island.
Seeing that monsters in this version are yet again more aggressive than in the past, players will have to be extra careful to avoid getting hit. If they are hit, they will suffer damage, which the player can in turn inflict on enemies. Both the amount of damage received and the amount that can be inflicted will depend on the distance between the player and the monster.
NPC’s spawn in a single location on the island which will then randomly move toward one of the four portals set up on the map. If a player is in close proximity, the NPC will attack on sight. Many of the rarer NPC’s will only drop items from plants during specific events, so players may need to collect certain items in order to obtain rarer ones. After several of these events, some locations will create plotlines for the player to follow which has random encounters when this is completed.
