the film follows the character of allan quatermain and his dealings with the other three members of the league of extraordinary gentlemen. the film begins with the league of extraordinary gentlemen receiving a letter from one of the team members who is in trouble. the letter leads the team to a mysterious and unknown location where they are met by a young mina murray. she tells them of a man in new orleans who is the cause of the mysterious letter and they set out to find him.
the plot is a typical espionage thriller with the league of extraordinary gentlemen trying to find the martian who has kidnapped their old friends to use him to destroy their world. they take on a series of villains, real and fantasy, and it does have a decent amount of action, although all the major action scenes seem like tacked on slabs of non-existent plot. the characters also seem like they are all there for a scene and dialogue and not for any particular purpose. it is very clear that the script was written by someone who didn’t actually care about the characters. the characters are not really developed and they even have the most non-appealing casting choices for the good guys. all the characters seem to be there just for the chance to have a fight with one of their old friends, or for a chance to talk about their life before the film. the characters are all so uninteresting that you would be bored to death if they were in real life. the characters are so uninteresting that they can’t even be dramatic about their own deaths in the film. all the characters just seem like they’re there to be tossed aside like excess baggage. if i hadn’t read the source material for the film, i never would have recognized any of them.the special effects are pretty good for the time, although they are hard to believe, and the cgi is not used very well. the film looks like it was made in the early 80’s and not in the 21st century. even the special effects for the fantasy elements, such as the flying ship and the walls of fire, look like they belong in an 80’s film. and the acting is very forgettable, with the worst performances being from sean connery, jemma redgrave and alan rickman. everyone just seems like they’re there for their special effect, rather than being truly fleshed out characters.
