This invention relates to the field of data processing, and more particularly to the asynchronous updating of a storage subsystem.
Computer systems may include one or more storage subsystems, such as disk drives, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, and other storage devices. The storage subsystems may be configured to store data for a host computer system.
The host computer system may store and retrieve data on the storage subsystem by way of a storage controller that controls one or more storage devices, often referred to as volumes. The host system may issue requests to store and retrieve data. In some instances, data is retrieved from a volume based on a logical volume number (LUN). For example, a disk drive may be logically identified to the host system as a device “A.” The host system may receive a request to write data to the storage subsystem. In response to receiving the request, the storage controller may check to determine whether the device “A” is available to process the request. If the device “A” is available, the data may be stored on the device “A.” If the device is not available, the storage controller may notify the host system that the device “A” is not available. In the case where the device “A” becomes available, the storage controller may then receive a request from the host to store data.
Before storing the data on a storage device, the storage controller may perform error checking. For example, a number of checks may be performed to ensure that the data to be stored on the storage device is correct. If a failure is detected during the error checking, the storage controller may flag the data that failed the error checking. Error flags may be stored to a volume and associated with a LUN number on the storage device. If data is stored on a storage device, the error flags may be used to determine whether a failure occurred and data that failed the error checking may be recovered.Sierra Foothill Academy
