The first half of the album spawned two singles, the second half spawned no singles. The album peaked at #1 on both the US Top Pop Albums and Top Black Albums charts. It is one of the most commercially successful albums released by country music artists.
The lead single, “I Thought It Was You” was a top 5 hit on the country music charts. The second single, “The Next Road”, a duet with Linda Ronstadt, peaked at #16. “Seven Bridges Road” became a major hit, peaking at #2 in the UK charts, #5 in New Zealand, and #9 on Billboard. This was the first Top 10 single the band had released.
Critical reception
AllMusic gave the album two stars out of five, saying, “Ultimately, this is the least interesting album by one of the most interesting groups in country music history…. It falls apart pretty fast when it comes to the songwriting.”
Accolades
The album earned the band its second Grammy nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (“Seven Bridges Road”). “Seven Bridges Road” won the award as well. This was the first time a group other than the Beatles had won Best Country Performance.
In 1992, the album was ranked #34 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums of 1991 list. A decade later in 2001, the album was ranked #3 on the Top Country Albums of the 90’s list.
