another problem i had with the local version of the game was that you could only carry one item at a time, meaning that an item like a wand needed to be carried if theres an enemy of the same type in a dungeon. inone way heroics plus, youre able to carry multiple items, but most of the items dont make sense in the local version. for instance, i was carrying around a wand with me in dungeons that had the ability to heal me; however, theres no way to use the healing item on someone else in local play. this is due to the local version not having the concept of permanent items and their uses; instead, every item you find is temporary and youre able to equip it once and use it once, and then theres no benefit to carrying them around to dungeons.
one way heroics: one way heroics plus is a quality game, and a bargain. although it is not a complete edition, it gives a lot of content for $10 on switch. there are no more payment options in this version, as the nintendo switch version of the game is completely free, so you can get it at any point and play it however you like.
this version ofmystery chronicle: one way heroicsdoes feel like a complete edition of the title, but there are a few niggles here and there. firstly, there is an optional display of the name of the character that youre currently playing on the world map screen, which can also be switched off, but is a nice detail that adds a bit of personality to the game; and secondly, the extra content does not make the base game any longer, but is something that should have been part of the original release of the game. one of the best things aboutone way heroicsis the sheer size of the worlds that youre thrown into at the start of a new game, and the ability to explore them at your own pace. when playing the ps4 version of the game, in particular, a playthrough that takes a couple of hours at most will still result in two or three or more maps to explore, and as such youll find yourself wishing that the base game was longer to give you more to look at on the map screen. the fact that a lot of the content is optional also means that you can play the game pretty much as it was intended.
not that there arent any other games in the series, of course;one way heroicsgets reprinted every year or two, with the latest edition being in 2018, and the series has also spawned spin-offs such asmystery chronicle: one way heroics 2andmystery chronicle: one way heroics 3.
if you fancy a bit of a change from the original, and you already own one of the previous games, then mystery chronicle: one way heroicsis a fine roguelike experience that doesnt take itself too seriously, and in which youre encouraged to explore the world at your own pace, losing cash and experience if youre not careful. it deserves a look if youre looking for something a bit different.
if youre a newcomer to the series, however, then youll probably want to get your hands on the original. if youre looking for a good bit of fun in a genre that can be a bit rough around the edges, then you should be looking atone way heroics.
the dungeons in one way heroics are all beautiful, with some nice details and interesting touches like the fact that a gash in the ground is a portal to another, smaller dungeon. but theyre also difficult, very difficult, and its certainly the case that youre best off just fighting things head on and then using the strongpoint system to get your heroes back in shape, rather than playing the game the way it was intended.
the presence of the extra dungeon isnt enough to make one way heroics an improvement on mystery chronicles solid, well-crafted execution. however, the additions are there, and there are some nice additions, such as the ability to turn the spirits you gather into spirits of fire and ice, bringing a degree of flexibility that was sorely lacking in the original. there are also some new classes, and theres a new mechanic that allows you to spectate your characters battle, which is a nice touch, but i wouldve liked to see it come with a way to revert your clones back to your original form.
