it was here, when he was about 10 years old, that horowitz first picked up the guitar. his family was of the sinti and romani people, and the guitar came to him by inheritance, as there was no gypsy guitar in the house. his great friend wrembel also taught him how to play. horowitz never really considered himself a gypsy, but he was very well respected by gypsy musicians. he was an outstanding teacher, and many gypsy musicians such as stephane wrembel and stephane wrembel, learned from him. horowitz was a great writer, and his book, gypsy picking techniques, is a must read for any gypsy guitarist.

horowitz was the first to break the theory of gypsy guitar technique down into a set of basic techniques that can be applied to any guitar. he made a detailed study of the picking motion, and found that by following the motion of the lower part of the fingers, one can achieve faster, more secure, and cleaner tone. he then went on to teach many variations of these techniques. the basic, basic technique has been shown in many instructional books, but horowtiz is the one who gave the technique its name, and he is the one who taught many famous gypsy guitarists like stephane wrembel, jimmy rosenberg, tcha limberger, etc.

many gypsy players have a very difficult time learning how to control the technique of the fingers. some use the thumb to help them, but the thumb is not suited for the technique. in the process of learning this technique, i’ve come across many guitarists who never will learn it. they cannot master it, but they can pick with it. still, they are great musicians, and they do so well that their playing is accepted as gypsy. this is not to say that they are not gypsy. they are.

there is one other aspect to gypsy picking that i have not seen covered in books. this is the use of a lot of chording with the guitar. for example, the chord progression g7-c#-f is played with the following chords: g7-c#-f (g chord, c# is played on the 1st fret of the 3rd string, and f is played on the first fret of the 6th string). this is done so that the lowest notes (from the 3rd string) are on the downbeats, and the highest notes (from the 6th string) are on the upbeats. another example is g7-dm7-c#-f. this chord progression is played with the following chords: g7-dm7-c#-f (g chord, dm7 is played on the 3rd fret of the 6th string, and c# is played on the 3rd fret of the 6th string).
in the first section, we look at the prerequisites for gypsy picking and the proper way to execute technique and hand shape. both playing techniques are used here and in the second section, we look at short patterns. i make a point of playing all the notes from the first half of the scale in descending order.here are some simple examples of gypsy picking. we follow the fingering in the book for these two typical django tunes:. first, the ‘gershwin jazz’ (also known as ‘sid’s tempo blues’) arrangement from gypsy picking, which i did in a break from filming “the horowitz chronicles.” in gypsy picking, there are three basic strokes that can be used for each string of notes: the downstroke, the upstroke, and the sweep. in gypsy picking, there are only two basic strokes, the downstroke and the sweep. this is a very common way of playing the guitar. but, you can use the upstroke too. sometimes, when the downstroke is too hard, you can use the upstroke, especially for the last note of each beat.the first section focuses on how to correctly execute technique and hand shape. the second section features a few short patterns that are played in the key of g.
