Creating layers
Layers are the cornerstone of Photoshop. Layers are like windows in a building — they allow you to view different layers of an image at different levels. Create layers to organize and manipulate your image. You then place those layers on top of one another to build your image.
Consider an image to be made up of windows, and a layer to be a layer of glass in the window. You would want to place that layer of glass over several windows to make a picture of the room that you’re in. You can edit each window, and the layer is placed over the next window, and each window you edit is placed on top of the previous window. If you wanted to replace one of the windows, you could erase the layer of glass and place a new layer of glass over the windows. The result is that you have a new view of the building with only one window with a pane of glass instead of many windows with a pane of glass on each window.
The fact that layers can be layered with one another is key to their usefulness. If you edit a window, you can just erase the old layer of glass and place a new one on top of that window.
You can’t duplicate a layer, but you can copy a layer by pressing Command+J or Ctrl+J (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+J (Windows). The results are two or more layers that are identical. The original layer is still intact, and a copy is made of it.
Duplicating layers can become the source of a lot of problems. If you duplicate a layer, you place it on top of all of your other layers. If you copy that layer, the copied layer goes onto the top of your document. That means that the copied layer’s position is determined by the order in which the layers are created. For example, if you create a layer and place it on top of a copy of the copied layer on top of a layer that’s placed on top of another layer, it should be easy to understand that the copied layer will show through when you place the copy on top of a fourth layer. In this scenario, you really have a layer of glass with three layers of windows.
Storing versions

This tutorial is not a complete tutorial on Photoshop Elements and it is meant to show you how to edit a photo using Photoshop Elements. Some of the tools are similar to Photoshop but some are not.
One thing that’s similar to Photoshop Elements is it’s layered file system.
Photoshop Elements has two types of layers:
Smart Object Layer – Can edit, move and manipulate without losing resolution.

A Smart Object Layer is an equivalent to a Photoshop file. It’s essentially a way to collaborate and share images. You are not limited to a single layer as in Photoshop. You can edit them independently.
There’s no need to choose between layers and smart object layers.
Photoshop Elements has a variety of tools to allow you to manipulate and edit your photos. The following are all the tools we will be using to edit our images.
Smart Objects.
Smart Object layers allow you to edit images independently without losing quality. It’s a method of collaboration and sharing.
Let’s edit a photo using Photoshop Elements.
Open your photo using Photoshop Elements. Click the Image menu -> Edit -> Edit smart object layer.
You can edit the image in two ways:
Edit the file
Edit the layer (added in later versions)
Let’s start by modifying the brightness and contrast of the photo.
To edit the file, click the Brightness/Contrast options at the top of the Smart Object window.
In this example I darkened the image for the first time.
To create a new adjustment layer use the Smart filter.
You can find them under Edit -> Adjustment. The Smart filter is not available on all versions of Photoshop Elements. In earlier versions of Photoshop Elements, Smart Filters were called Smart Object filters.
You can also use the Adjustment layer. This is a layer for creating new adjustments and apply it to the entire image.
To create the Adjustment layer, click the icon with the three arrows at the bottom of the Edit menu.
Once created you can add other adjustments or adjustments layers.
To add an Adjustment layer right click on the layer and select Add Adjustment Layer.

Improvements in the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) have resulted in an increased chance of long-term survival. The indication for intensive chemotherapy has however shifted from an induction therapy aiming at immediate remission to a consolidation therapy aimed at prolonged survival of AML patients. This new approach has been possible thanks to the integration of high dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in the treatment of most patients with AML. Among the best supportive measures to combat the complications of intensive chemotherapy, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been tested in a double blind placebo controlled study. The results of the study showed that the administration of G-CSF improved bone marrow reconstitution. G-CSF in combination with intensive consolidation therapy is associated with an improved survival for AML patients. This combination therapy is now accepted as standard therapy for newly diagnosed AML patients in Japan. Immunotherapy for AML has also been extensively studied in recent years. A large portion of patients with AML have surface antigens different from those of most normal tissues. Our studies demonstrated that patients with AML may be tolerant of their host tissues. However, they retained the ability to mount an immune response against certain foreign antigens. This was also demonstrated in the treatment of a patient with AML in relapse following allogeneic BMT who received an anti-Tac antibody and donor lymphocyte infusion. With this approach, the patient achieved an immunologic remission. Two other clinical trials showed that a recombinant IL-2 was effective in inducing remission in patients with AML or chronic myelogenous leukemia.
