Photoshop Elements
The graphics software from Adobe is just as popular as Photoshop, but its name is not simply a verb. Photoshop Elements is a free, downloadable package that is ideal for photographers who want to enhance their images without spending thousands of dollars to purchase Photoshop.

Photoshop Elements is a desktop image-editing program that can be downloaded from the Apple or Windows Store and runs on the computer’s operating system. You can purchase Photoshop Elements on a monthly or yearly basis.
You can use Photoshop Elements to create unique digital images. You can also use the software to enhance existing images by using its tools for cropping, red-eye reduction, color, and file conversion.

A good friend of mine recently worked as a graphic designer using Photoshop Elements on a regular basis, and he took my advice and purchased the software to edit his images. I wanted to share some of the images that I changed. These were all photos of family and friends. I wanted to add a bit of a “photographer’s touch” to them. I made the following changes:
I changed the background and created a new background using several layers. I kept my original image, so I did not even mess with the white space around the photo.

Edit images in Adobe Photoshop Elements
The canvas in the graphic editor is an indispensable tool for most designers and illustrators. It is used for drawing or creating icons. It is also a great tool to use if you want to add or remove objects in the image.
The basic tools are the Pencil tool (L), the Paint Bucket tool (C), the Eraser tool (E) and the Brush tool (B). You can use any tool from the Tools panel to draw on the canvas.
There are four basic layers: Background (B), Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3.
A layer is a collection of pixels, which you can adjust independently, as in the background layer.
There are also two basic color palettes: Colors and Gradients. Colors allow you to change a given pixel and Gradients allows you to change the paint color for the whole layer.
You can select and colorize a specific pixel. You can also apply a filter over a selected area or colorize the whole canvas. There are many other similar tools like these. You will learn how to use all of them in the remaining sections.
Layers in Photoshop Elements
Adobe Photoshop Elements uses a layer for everything that includes a shade of gray for the whole canvas. It is very handy for designing. For example, if you want to cut an object out of another one, then you can do so easily.
When working on Photoshop Elements, it is very convenient to create a layer and then put the objects you want to edit on the appropriate layer.
Open the layer and edit everything that you want to work on. You can apply a filter or use any other graphic editor feature to edit your layer.

The other tools are less used, but still useful. You can use the Straighten tool to align images with a grid or to make sure that an image is straight. The Move Tool lets you control the position of the current layer and of the currently selected object, such as an image or a group of objects. You can also use the Zoom tool to make a portion of a document fit the canvas exactly.

## Starting a New Project
To launch the Photoshop interface, use File⇒New, or press Ctrl+N (⌘-N). If you are using Windows, there’s also an icon called New Project in the Tools panel.
When Photoshop launches, you see the New dialog box, as shown in Figure 3-7.
