Step 1 – Open the photo in Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements is a slightly more expensive version of Photoshop and its features are only slightly different to the paid version. The difference is mainly in the interface – it is usually easier to use with one hand.
Open the photo by double clicking the file, or dragging it onto the screen.
If Photoshop Elements opens another window when you double-click the file, close it and open the main window.
Step 2 – Expand the Background
To get started in Photoshop Elements you will need to take out any unwanted distractions in your image.
Select Filter – Enhance – Unwanted, which is on the Menu bar.

Step 3 – Make Selections
This is the first step for photo retouching – make the area that you want to work on and select it.
Click and hold on the photo, then click and drag to select the area that you want to edit. You can select multiple areas by pressing and holding shift.
Step 4 – Cropping
Now take out any unnecessary parts from the image using the following steps.
From the Menu bar select Edit – Auto Crop.
This will open a menu with lots of options.
If you want to crop to a square shape, hold down the ctrl button while dragging the rectangle to make a square.
To auto crop the image to keep the area as close to the center as possible, set the crop to Auto (1:1).
This will auto crop the image around the center, keeping the image close to the center.
Select Crop – Auto and then click OK.
Step 5 – Clean Up
The next step to clean up is to remove any unwanted objects in the image such as people, line drawings, animals or plain lines.
Select Filter – Enhance – Enhance Lighting, which is on the Menu bar.
Then select the smaller check box and click OK.
Select Filter – Noise – Remove Noise, which is on the Menu bar.
Then select the smaller check box and click OK.
Step 6 – Fix the Background
This step involves setting the background to plain white or another colour using the following steps.
Select Edit – Color Balance.
