The waterflooding is a process of injecting a surfactant or polymer into aformation to reduce the mobility of hydrocarbons. It is an innovative technology thatis an important sub-component of surfactant/polymer flooding (SPF) systems.Transitional plug flow pipelines can be used for this method. Surfaceactive agents and polymers are used to lower the surface and interfacial tensions,thus facilitating natural or forced (air) displacement. This makes it essential to apply foam inhibitors in the production phases(light to moderate gas production typically with SPF), to reduce this acceleration.
SPF fields are a relatively new, proven method of production inhibition andremoval. SPF is referred to as an in situ chemical recovery method. The approachbuilds upon mechanical stimulation (fracturing, high-pressure fluid injection,etc.) to improve hydrocarbon capture from the reservoir. The SPF process canbe tailored for a specific well. Operators can specify the desired permeabilities, mobilities,porosities, pressures, and temperatures, and the SPF process will apply thenecessary stimulation to enhance recovery of hydrocarbons. The SPF process isoperations can be managed and controlled via a multi-zone, multi-channel downhole control system.
The SPF-injected fluids can force out hydrocarbons through high permeability zones, as well as into regions with the highest fluid volume. The SPF process is typically timed to be in service for 12 to 36 months. FESM operators must monitor the cycle time carefully. If the SPF injection cycle is too short, it can result in premature gobover.
