conan the destroyer is a cinematic adventure that was created by director john milius, who wanted to give his take on the character. milius had been the mastermind behind the film apocalypse now, which was based on joseph conrad’s heart of darkness. the same idea applied to conan, with john milius turning it into a musical style akin to that found in the film. the idea for the film was to relate to the brand new character of conan, who had been only recently created in robert e. howard’s stories.
ksiniczka jehnna (voiced by olivia d’abo) is an adept warrior who is the daughter of the princess jehnna. she travels with conan to shadizar to rescue the princess, whom she had been very close to. after discovering the sacrificial ceremony, she stops it, and kills bombatta and several of the guards. later, conan and his friends arrive back in the palace, and kills bombatta and several of the guards, and is interrupted by zula’s spear, killing the high priestess. zula and jehnna’s cousin gora was a spy for wrath-amon, and secretly tricked zula into the ambush where he was captured by wrath-amon’s slavers so he could inherit the throne instead of zula. gora schemed against conan and his friends, and was eventually discovered and captured. zula was a master of the sign of jhebbal-sag, which allowed him to communicate with beasts and persuade them to aid him. originally armed with star metal bolas, he reforged them into a boomerang because the bolas tangled. they would return on command thanks to jezmine.

the two-hour movie version of sword and sorcery: the adventures of conan was filmed on location in spain, west germany and the us. the film was marketed as a “sword and sorcery epic” on the basis that the film’s production company, universal studios, had already successfully marketed a low-budget sword and sorcery film, 1976’s the thief of bagdad, as a “swashbuckler”. it was released in theatres in the usa and europe on 5 december 1984, and in europe on 25 january 1985. the film has a running time of 119 minutes and is a remake of a popular 1967 italian sword and sorcery film, also titled sword and the sorcerer.
universal’s attempt to do a fantasy epic using conan the barbarian characters and elements failed to recapture the same kind of appeal as the italian movie, because it lacked the quality of the italian film. in addition, the american adaptation was not released in america until after the italian one. the script was by leslie stevens, and co-written by frank darabont and stan winston, the latter having been involved in two earlier attempts to produce a conan film in the late 1970s. the script was loosely based on the stories in the late 1930s and early 1940s by robert e. howard, creator of conan. howard’s stories were later collected in a series of conan books.
darabont and winston made two substantial changes to the original howard story: the first was to move conan’s entry into the world to the present, where the sword and sorcery are taking place in california. the second change was to add the title character, conan the cimmerian, to the story. the film is set during the current time, and conan is in the us working as a bodyguard and swordsman to protect two hostages, an american lady and a japanese diplomat. as usual, conan encounters an assortment of sword and sorcery characters, including kull, the legendary king of atlantis, who has his own designs on the lady, kothar-khan, a huge, hulking barbarian warrior who is conan’s mortal enemy, and the evil sorcerer nakor. the action takes place in california, and the film’s production designer, ralph hamel, decided to make the city with a moorish look.
