PORTLAND, Maine — A University of Maine student says he tried to help a young transgender woman in the state’s only college town but found the gender identity crisis was too much to handle, so he turned to the police.
Zachary Beaulieu, a 19-year-old from Litchfield, has been suspended for a month for hitting the transgender woman with a “stop and frisk” after he was caught trying to help her off the street.
He was walking home from class late at night last Thursday when he was approached by the 20-year-old woman, who had just had her phone stolen by two men, Beaulieu told the Bangor Daily News. He asked her where she was going, and when she said he didn’t know, he offered to walk her to her dorm.
Beaulieu said he only knew the woman as “the girl” — and because he suspected she had had a rough night, he thought he should walk her to her dorm.
“She didn’t want to go there,” Beaulieu told the paper. “She had been drinking, and she was already in some sort of trouble.”
“I was just trying to help her. That’s it.”
Police say they have no reason to believe Beaulieu’s account, but he has been suspended from the university for a month for “violation of campus conduct.”
Beaulieu is the third student to be punished at UMaine for helping a transgender person, following similar incidents in 2011 and 2012.
Ian Thompson, a fourth-year student at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, was suspended for five years after he was charged with misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct for helping a transgender student go into a men’s restroom at a restaurant.
He was convicted, but the case was later dropped because the victim changed her story.
