Review: Paulina Ostaen has crafted an incredibly complex and beautifully structured tale full of suspense and intrigue. With a haunting piece of dialogue from the main character to the ending, Ostaen takes the reader on a visually arresting journey filled with a plethora of characters that we’ve come to admire and some we’ve come to love.
As far as all-encompassing thrillers go, this was an astounding achievement. I was constantly having to remind myself that it was a flash fiction piece, despite the grand scope of the plot. It was just plain impossible to see how this short story could ever be fully worked into the vivid plot of a larger novel.
Ostaen has given the reader an emotional roller coaster. We are thrust into the middle of a professional office intrigue that is masterfully executed. From the dark hints of illicit relationships to the beautiful mix of espionage, we are given several angles to view a closed door room with these characters. The suspense was intriguing, as we could not fully fathom the motivations of each character in this narrative.
The dialogue and various characters are brought to life through illustrations, which really help to round out the dialogue. Ostaen’s writing has an addictive quality that has me craving more. It’s beautiful.
I love the fact that the reader and the character are pulled into this story so deeply. There are several subplots that help to further develop the characters. It was a pleasing mindframe into which to enter.
