Is there any sense in locking the field if the purpose is to prevent modifying a value?
In java, i have seen a pattern i.e if i assign value to a field, i create a lock to prevent other threads from modifying the value. In case of database tables, it is used to prevent concurrent modifications to the same row.
But i have also seen other places in java, like locking a field to prevent another process from reading the value.
For example, in Message Queue implementations, in case of a persistent queue, this is used to prevent another process from blocking the queue.
Is it a valid use of a lock in java? The idea is that the use of a lock is to prevent another process from modifying a value?

Using locks for locking a row in a database table is generally a bad idea. This is because the locks only ensure that the object can’t be read. They do not prevent reads or updates from modifying the contents of the table.

In your examples, your locking mechanism is inadequate because it requires you to lock in place the entire object which isn’t practical.
In the second example, it is equally possible (read: more than likely) that there will be multiple threads writing to the queue at once.
In the first example, it is clearly a single thread trying to modify an object which the other thread is reading.
Thus, if you use a lock to lock the field (even if the object is immutable), the object will be effectively locked in place as if another thread were to
