However, plenty of data exist supporting the idea that not all sex is created equal. According to the website Healthline, about half of adult men over the age of 45 suffer from a condition called “adult onset hypogonadism” — known commonly as “low testosterone.” This can lead to a decrease in sex drive, and if it’s not treated, can also lead to osteoporosis.
This might be a problem for a person’s long-term health, but for many people — with testosterone levels in their normal range — it’s a non-issue. From a purely health standpoint, casual sex isn’t really an issue. But when it comes to emotional and mental well-being, things are a little different.
It’s true that having casual sex has become more common and in many ways, more expected. But it’s important to remember that there are limits to how much one can be expected to sacrifice to ensure certain standards of comfort, responsibility and sustainable happiness. Though ‘happiness’ may be a word that we throw around a lot these days, there’s a clear difference between one’s baseline happiness — a state of feeling content and satisfied with life — and ‘experiencing happiness.’
I think that it is problematic that every encounter should be expected to include a potential of emotional, social, and physical risks, and to involve a temporal suspension of the conventional codes of sincerity, fidelity, and equality.
But never before has casual sex been so attainable. Tinder, for instance, has more than 52 million users. Hooking up on it is absolutely free. This means more people are having and seeking casual sex. Meanwhile, porn has skyrocketed in recent years, helping people become more familiar with sex acts and sexual positions, something that less than a decade ago wouldn’t have been something everyone was open to exploring.
Is this casual sex revolution making us more mentally prepared to have casual sex?
The most extreme behavior on these apps is what has come to be known as the “swipe.” By swiping left or right, you decide whether you’re interested or not interested, then immediately you’re matched to the next person for a possible sexual connection. The person you liked just got swiped away. You might not even have heard of this dating app.
The time commitment that casual sex makes in dating apps can be seen as a result of this pressure

Most casual sex is harmless in that it is far less harmful than having to deal with a loving, committed partner who cares about you and wants to have your babies. Casual sex is more dangerous if it becomes addictive. In this case, casual sex can start to feel like a drug because it is. We become so dependent on feeling the rush, the discharge, and the guilt-free dirty hit of casual sex that we begin to depend on it for our sense of well-being. In other words, we stop being in love with our mates. Casual sex can be a destructive force because it can be difficult to stop an addiction.
How to Avoid Hookup Culture
In the paragraphs above, I strongly implied that casual sex is inherently unhealthy and, moreover, bad for your mental and physical health. It’s not without its drawbacks, but it’s a lot healthier than conventional sex. The arguments above have been made here before and in other places. No matter how you look at the facts, there’s no denying the reality of its existence in today’s culture. It may not be obvious, but casual sex is very much a part of our dating lives.
Basically, when you start casually hooking up, you’ve just begun casually engaging in sex. And if that casual sex has been repeated enough times, it can start to feel as though you’re addicted to casual sex. You won’t realize it until you’re wide awake on your couch in your pajamas on your free Saturday morning after a night of casual hooking up, staring at the clock and wondering when your life was scheduled to begin again. The whole thing may begin as a little bit of an annoyance or even just an acquired interest, but it becomes more of a problem the longer you get into it.
Welcome to casual dating.
Generally speaking, casual dating (and casual sex) can lead to quite bad consequences. But getting past this challenge can start you on a long journey towards finding your relationship with your self and your partner(s). Ultimately, dating will lead to a deeper, more meaningful and satisfying relationship, a life lesson that I truly believe will prove to you that casual sex isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.
