Final Fantasy XII is the story of Vaan, a young man living in the kingdom of Dalmasca, a small land situated in the east of the world of Ivalice. After being abandoned as a child, Vaan encounters Ashe, a princess of Dalmasca and his friend; the two make their way through the countryside, their way marked by Grayditch, the Dalmascan people’s guardian an “ancestral hero” and the secret savior of Dalmasca after the downfall of the monarchy. Following Ashe’s assassination and Grayditch’s demise, Vaan, joined by his thief friend, Penelo, sets out to regain pride and recover Ashe’s crown as the rightful king of Dalmasca.
The game takes place in Ivalice, a large world map structured as nine continents that are often split up by large bodies of water or desert. Outposts are also spread along the main continents and the game frequently takes travel between continents, particularly in order to access events or items that are only available in specific locations.
Final Fantasy XIII is designed to be played in a third-person perspective, and the story is told in a way that involves a large number of cutscenes, most of which can be viewed after having been triggered by the player’s actions.
While the game uses many of the same basic elements of the Final Fantasy series, such as choosing one of several “jobs” (character classes), it is very heavily influenced by elements of the Final Fantasy Legend series. Nonetheless, the game has its own distinct feel and maintains its own identity. The game takes place in a world where the planet Zarathustra has begun to undergo a catastrophic natural event that will eventually cause the planet to collapse—as the world of Ivalice is threatened in an invading force from the Planet (Zarathustra’s moon) Cocoon.
A sort of sequel of the previous Final Fantasy XIII title, Final Fantasy XIII-2 takes players to a future — 10 years into the future — timeline in which Cocoon has been as it is today, and about to get destroyed by a boy named Noel Kreiss by his own hands. Noel had been gifted with the ability to control the elements.
