other game makers sometimes attempted to imitate the candlestick games. many of these imitations were simply children’s toys, such as the candle-stick dominoes of american mahoney, the 1684 dominoes of mayer & oetzel of munich, or the variety of european candlestick games in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. in 1747, richard james published a book entitled candlestick games, an imitation of dominoes, &c;thus gaining the distinction of being the first acknowledged candlestick-maker. john jasper, a native of london, developed candlestick games there around 1762.

while candlestick games are often seen as children’s toys, the game had been popular among adults since the 17th century. a version for adults, titled “negenspiel” was published in 1862. by the mid-19th century, separate sets of candlesticks for the game and board to indicate the number of players were widely available. some sets included jacks, telling when a player drops out, and a monkey on the top of the set to indicate when a player or pair drop out, as well.
