# Image Manipulation with Photoshop and Its Layers
In Photoshop, the basic units of the image are the layers. There is nothing wrong with using photos as layers as long as you know your way around and you are not trying to do any artistic images, for example, creating a painting or creating an image that looks photoshopped.
To begin with, you need to open a new image file, create a new image layer, and then start layering up your images as Photoshop’s layers. To do this, follow these steps:
1. **Click the New Layer icon (it looks like two intersecting lines) on the Layers panel or press the letter C on your keyboard.**
This icon opens a menu with one entry: New Layer.
2. **Choose the color of your new layer.**
I often use a color that differs from the one I used when I took the photo of the family. At this point, you may have a set of layers in front of your image with slightly different colors — these should represent the different parts of the family photo.
From the Layers panel, drag an image onto the image window. You may need to resize the image to fit the size of the image window.
3. **To place the image on the new layer, select the New Layer icon and choose the image you want to place.**
You also can move the image onto the new layer by simply clicking it.
4. **Once you have all the images you want, select and move any layer to a different location on your image window.**
When you’re done editing a layer, move it off the image window to change the visibility of the layer. You may need to reposition your image window to see the different layers as they move.
If you don’t want to leave a layer visible, just change the _Opacity_ (or transparency) of that layer. Figure 9-17 shows

If you’ve just downloaded and installed Photoshop Elements, you’re going to be looking at its User Interface. There are two main parts to the software: the image view and the workspace. You’ll be using the workspace to carry out the most common tasks, but the image view is where you’ll be most likely to start.
So let’s take a closer look at the Image View and the Workspace.
The Image View
Before you start editing images, you need to load them into the Image View.
Open the folder you want to edit, then click on the Browse button at the top right. You’ll see a list of the photos in the selected folder. Select the photos you want to edit.
You can zoom in and out by using the mouse scroll wheel. The zoom factor is set to 100% by default.
To display the image at its natural size, drag the image into the image view using the mouse or use the right and left cursor keys.
The image is in grayscale (colours are greyscale). However, to view a colour image, you will need to convert the image to a colour mode.

Hey all,
Okay, I’m a little fed up. My date of March 25th is quickly approaching and I’m just getting more and more antsy… and I haven’t even told my man I’m ready for him to start planning! I actually threw down a few hundred bucks for the outfit I’m wearing on that date and I’ve been dying to share. The truth is, I was planning on sharing the entire trip with him when I get to that point, but my pride wouldn’t let it happen. It’s just how I go casual. I have a black scoop-neck tee as well with a similar logo, and I have a grey polo that’s a little more tailored to the weather.
But the shorts I’m wearing here are the only thing new. I picked these up in November at Target. They’re the capris with the long pockets and a built-in watch pocket. The material is extremely soft, which I appreciate considering they’re super casual.
The problem is, as great as I want to think these will be, I’m totally not convinced that I will stay casual all week. The weather here in Ohio is just too darn cold to really do casual. I like to think I’d dress up a bit more, but I know that I won’t really have much to work with.
So what do you guys think? Do I get my hopes up for nothing or will I be freezing my ass off during this trip?
Then we went to dinner. We ate at a restaurant where everyone orders their own food from a buffet. It was pretty awesome. We just grabbed what we liked and chowed down.
