The Disintegration Machine

After their fight in the previous film, Captain America and Black Widow are captured by the authorities and taken to the secret S-Hole base, the War Room. During questioning, Steve Rogers is asked if he is a spy for HYDRA, but cannot say anything. He is immediately handcuffed and drugged, and is thrown to the Disintegration Chair, one of the many such torture devices used by Hydra and the KGB.

In the Chair, Captain America is put into a state of deep sleep, which he wakes from with the aid of the Black Widow, who tells him that he is still free and that he is immune to the HYDRA control. Having woken from his induced sleep, Captain America remains under HYDRA’s control for almost the entire film, going against his own will.

In the meantime, the Winter Soldier has been trapped in a block of ice. After several attempts to escape, he is freed by Black Widow, who explains that she cannot tell Rogers anything because of her mission for HYDRA.

The two talk about HYDRA’s control of the United States government and the world at large, including a pair of high-ranking CIA officials who are willing to play along with HYDRA’s plans and break their own laws. After failing to use the one known weapon capable of stopping HYDRA, they are both captured.

Captain America and Black Widow escape from the base on the airplane bound for the U.S. and proceed to the Soviet Union, where they fight against the Winter Soldier and a small army of HYDRA officers, led by Alexander Pierce. A member of HYDRA from the previous film, Pierce was shown to have been “re-engineered” to become a clone of Bucky Barnes. During the fight, Captain America tricks Pierce into an explosion, sending him flying into the nearby river, and the three of them begin to fight.

After destroying a column of ice, the two of them are stopped by a massive monster. It is revealed that this is Hulk, who is furious at the actions of the Winter Soldier and Captain America. While the two confront each other, the Winter Soldier is ultimately convinced to ally with Captain America to stop HYDRA and its plans, leading to a wide-scale battle between the two sides. The fight between the two continues for several days, on and off the ice, before a truce is formed, and the two leave each other in peace
